On its one-year anniversary, we’re taking a look at Netflix’s most successful limited series to date, adolescence. How did it become an international phenomenon?
when netflix premiered adolescence In March 2025, no one could have imagined what a massive impact it would have – not just for British audiences, but for audiences around the world. Told through Philip Barantini’s smooth, visionary one-shot technique, the 4-episode series was written by acclaimed screenwriter Jack Thorne with contributions from star Stephen Graham.
adolescence Tells the tragic story of Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper), who comes from a suburban, working-class family, consisting of his father (Stephen Graham), mother (Christine Tremarco) and sister Lisa (Amelie Pease). In the opening scene, a teenager is arrested after being accused of murdering a classmate. Jamie’s mental state will then be explored in depth through police interviews and an incredible one-on-one session with a psychologist.
It also documents the intense investigation of the murder by DI Luke Bascombe (Ashley Walters) and DA Mischa Frank (Faye Marsay). The series is fictional, but with knife crime seen as a significant public safety issue in the UK, it feels raw and entirely plausible.
In terms of viewership, adolescence The single is the best-performing limited series in Netflix history. And in Netflix’s English-language TV rankings, it remains the second most popular show ever for the streamer. Wednesday: Season 1. This puts it above some of Netflix’s most acclaimed and cornerstone series, such as Stranger Things, BridgertonAnd night agent.

Stephen Graham on returning to adolescence
As we mentioned, adolescence is too much Limited series. It is standalone, and all its rewards come under Limited Social class. However, after the massive success of the series, co-writer Stephen Graham is not strictly against a follow-up series. It remains to be seen whether such a project follows a new set of characters, or is based on an existing story.
Of course, Jamie’s story has already been told. But this does not mean that there is no scope for creating another story. during an interview with DiversityStar and co-creator Stephen Graham considered the possibility of a follow-up. “There is a possibility of developing another story,” he said. “I guess what I’m trying to say is that we didn’t know it would impact socially the way it did, but it seems to have cut across all race, creed and hierarchical structures of society with the message that it’s carrying about our youth.”
More recently, Graham provided more clarity on whether another season is possible. He said, “I can’t answer that question because it’s somewhere deep in my mind and Jack’s mind.” deadline. “We’ll figure it out in three or four years, so stay tuned.” We have written in detail about a possible ‘Season 2’ here.
