It’s time to step back to 1959 Hawkins – this time from the comfort of your living room. After years of rumors and intense fan speculation, it appears that Netflix is finally capturing the magic of the platform Stranger Things: First Shadow To watch from the comfort of your living room. The Broadway performance has reportedly been paused this week to facilitate professional “pro-shot” filming, setting the stage for this important prequel to reach a wider audience, providing essential lore that bridges the gap to the fifth and final season.

collider reported earlier todayCiting sources who said a recording would take place late last year and is taking place this week, performances from February 10 to 14 have been canceled to facilitate filming. Netflix itself has not yet officially confirmed this. He did not specify whether it would be a Broadway or West End performance (both have different casts), although looking at quoted cast members he suggests it would be a Broadway offering. We couldn’t get tickets for the New York or London performances this entire week.

The stage play headed to Netflix has been long rumored and long discussed, but whenever we’ve reached out to sources over the past few years, we’ve been told there are currently no plans. We contacted Netflix last week regarding a spin-off we’ve heard is in development (which doesn’t align with this recording), and they declined to comment.

The stage play coming to Netflix has long been rumored as it provided important details about the lore of the main show, which would have been very helpful for those watching Season 5. It serves as a prequel to the main show, detailing Henry Creel’s time in high school (with the likes of Bob Newby, Hopper and Joyce) and his newly acquired powers and curse after touching the mysterious stone that granted him a link to the Mind Flayer.

As it currently stands, tickets for the Broadway play are still on sale until at least September 2026, and in London’s West End until at least May 2026. Announced some cast changes today. I’ve covered the drama before and can honestly say that if you can afford the expensive tickets and make the trip, this is a must-watch, and watching it on a TV screen won’t do it justice, no matter how well done it is.

Stage plays having an impact on streaming services isn’t entirely new; One of Disney+’s biggest releases to date was the filmed screening of Hamilton, which continues to perform well in both Disney+ and ticket sales today.

Until the live-recording comes to Netflix, you can get closer to watching with Behind the Scenes: Stranger Things First ShadowA documentary which was released in April 2025, providing insight from the show’s creative team and cast just before its West End debut.

Stranger Things: First Shadow Directed by Stephen Daldry and co-directed by Justin Martin. The Duffer Brothers, Jack Thorne and Kate Trefry are behind the script. The show runs 2 hours and 45 minutes, so it will be interesting to see if that runtime is cut down theatrically for film presentation or divided into multiple episodes. We’d guess the latter, given that the show itself is divided into chapters like the Mothership show.
