One of the most anticipated shows for the 2026 European line-up, the series adaptation of the best-selling Harry Hole books, hits Netflix globally this week. A game of cat-and-mouse between crooked cops and a series of terrifying numbers linked to a mysterious diamond-like shape: is this series as irresistible as the page-turners it takes its name from?
harry hole He already has a dozen books to his name, and he is usually associated with page-turning Nordic noir mysteries, since the author Jo Nesbo Published his first novel in 1997. With the same producers (British company Working Title), Hole returns to the series as it played Tobias SantelmannFollowing a disastrous and widely panned film adaptation in 2017, Snowman. Nesbo is writing all the scripts for the nine episodes of this first season, which are taken from the fifth book of the series, devil’s star.
The logline for the series states:

The series begins with Hol nursing long-standing psychological wounds from a car accident five years earlier. There are two main arcs in the series. Respected by his rank, this detective also harbors a personal grudge against Hole, as a car accident 5 years ago took the life of his then-partner. As Waller, Kinnaman gives a controlled performance with a vacant, cynical gaze that is serviceable, especially when this corrupt cop is reckless in his maneuverings with the Oslo underworld. And by the end of the first episode, it will leave a bloody mess that will arouse Hole’s suspicions. Nesbo shows command of this dance between lonely, tortured characters, and Waller eventually becomes quite the Mephisto figure to Harry Hole, trying to lure him to the other side of the law, even when he thinks his career is over. Although this dance with the devil provides the backdrop for most of the dramatic tension, it can also be overly insistent on it.

Which leads us to the second red herring, which is Titanic. devil’s star The case: A series of gruesome murders, apparently separate, in which the victims were young women and a mysterious red jewel was left on their bodies. This may be where the series falters, as the author of the book is also adapting it into episodes, and it definitely takes its sweet time in revealing the criminals’ intentions and sinister plans. Most of the time, viewers are unaware of what happened before the hole, leaving them trying to put the pieces together, which probably doesn’t make for the most interesting show. harry holeIts pace rewards patience, and its moody, conflicted lead characters aren’t easy to watch. It also doesn’t stop the occasional graphic violence, which eventually veers towards the unnecessary, especially as the series lacks any lighter moments, other than Hole’s attempts to bond with Raquel’s son, which are a welcome respite from the unsettling confrontations and discoveries.

Decision on Netflix’s Harry Hole
Even though Sentelman and Kinnaman’s chemistry is meant to be opposite sides of the same tortured coin, the messy murder mystery proves to be a little more comfortable with its slower pace and well-placed twists, earning interest beyond fans of the character and the books. The flow of graphic violence, episode by episode, may not be suitable for all subscribers, but the appeal of the well-defined Harry Hole character could make this series a potential sequel, still adapted from the books.
