If you’re a subscriber to Netflix’s Standard with Ads plan, you’ll notice a welcome change when looking for new or old Sony Pictures movies when you log in today. Overnight, Netflix has quietly removed the infamous “padlock” icon from Sony Pictures movies, unlocking both legacy catalog titles and recent pay-1 window releases to ad-tier users for the first time and much earlier than expected.
This comes as a massive and very welcome Easter surprise.
Since Netflix signed its big global deal with Sony Pictures To bring all of Sony’s dramatic output to Netflix in 2021, including massive franchises spider man and upcoming legend of zeldaThis is a big challenge for the growing segment of the customer base. Due to pre-existing licensing constraints, those large-scale theatrical releases were placed behind a paywall, available exclusively to Premium and standard ad-free subscribers.
In fact, if you’ve regularly checked out our ongoing list of movies and series unavailable on Netflix’s ad tier, you know that Sony Pictures titles have historically made up a large portion of the restricted library, which, until recently, stood at about 1.5% of the total library. Ad-tier subscribers attempting to watch recent box office hits during their “Pay-1 window” (the period immediately following a theatrical release when a film makes its streaming debut) were prompted to upgrade their plan.
So, why is this a shock? Because this is happening much ahead of schedule.
We previously confirmed that Sony Pictures films will not be integrated into Netflix’s ad tier until 2027. This is due to the brand new deal, which will begin in 2027 and expand first-window deals globally. Netflix confirmed to us that all of its movies will be available at the ad tier. It appears that Netflix and Sony have returned to the negotiating table to work out an addendum that has successfully cleared licensing hurdles to allow ads to run alongside these titles sooner than expected.
What does this mean for ad-tier subscribers?
The blockage has been lifted with immediate effect. This applies to two major categories of Sony content:
- Legacy Catalog Title: Older Sony Pictures movies licensed from Netflix (think classic comedies, legacy action franchises, and older Marvel properties) are now fully playable with ads.
- Pay-1 window continues: Blockbusters fresh from theaters now available Everyone.
This means that recently added e.g. 28 years later: Bone Temple, clicka, Nuremberg, AnacondaAnd Sisu: Path of Revenge Now available at ad level. This also extends to older catalog titles pixel, vertical range, the glass HouseAnd Brothers Grimsby, to name but a few.
This is an incredibly opportune time for customers. If you take a look at our preview of Sony Pictures movies coming to Netflix in 2026 and beyond, the pipeline is absolutely stacked. Unlocking these titles now means ad-tier users won’t miss out on some of the biggest streaming premieres of the year without having to shell out extra cash for a premium, ad-free plan.
