us President (1995)

  • Style: Romantic Comedy / Drama
  • mold: Michael Douglas, Annette Bening, Martin Sheen, Michael J. fox
  • Order: 114 minutes

Before creating The West Wing, Aaron Sorkin wrote this sharp, witty script, which Reiner brought to life. The film follows a widowed US President Andrew Shepherd (Douglas) who attempts a relationship with an environmental lobbyist (Bening) as he enters his reelection year. It’s arguably one of the finest political romantic comedies ever made, featuring trademark Sorkin “walk and talk” dialogue and a heavy dose of ’90s idealism.

the bucket List (2007)

  • Style: Adventure / Comedy / Drama
  • mold: Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman, Sean Hayes
  • Order:97 minutes

Two terminally ill men from completely different worlds – a billionaire Edward (Nicholson) and a mechanic Carter (Freeman) – find themselves sharing a hospital room. They decide to move out and spend their remaining months completing their “bucket list” of things to do before they die, ranging from skydiving to seeing the Taj Mahal. It is a tear-jerker based on the incredible charisma of its two leads.

rumor has it… (2005)

  • Style: romantic comedy
  • Mould: Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Costner, Shirley MacLaine, Mark Ruffalo
  • Order:97 minutes

In this meta-comedy, Sarah Huttinger (Aniston) goes home for her sister’s wedding and uncovers a family secret: her grandmother (McLaine) may have been the inspiration for Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate, and she may have been the result of a scandalous affair. She seeks out a rich tycoon (Costner) who could be her father. For Shirley MacLaine’s scene-stealing performance as the sharp-tongued grandmother.

ghosts of mississippi (1996)

  • Style:Drama/History
  • mold: Alec Baldwin, Whoopi Goldberg, James Woods
  • Order: 130 minutes

Reiner presents a sobering true story in this courtroom drama. Decades after the assassination of civil rights leader Medgar Evers, a prosecutor (Baldwin) reopens the case to finally convict white supremacist Byron De La Beckwith (Woods). Whoopi Goldberg plays Evers’ widow, Myrlie, who fought for justice for more than 30 years. James Woods received an Academy Award nomination for his brilliant portrayal of Beckwith.

flipped form (2010)

  • Style: Romance/Coming of Age

As they reach junior high, the dynamic flips – as Bryce begins to appreciate her, Julie begins to wonder if he is essentially shallow. It captures the same innocent, period-piece nostalgia that Renner was adept at stand with me.

alex and emma (2003)

  • Style: romantic comedy

  • Runtime: 96 minutes

Loosely inspired by the life of Fyodor Dostoyevsky, this rom-com stars Luke Wilson as a writer with a gambling problem who must finish a novel in 30 days to pay off debts. He hires a stenographer (Hudson), and as they work, her stubborn criticisms of his story begin to reshape the novel and their relationship.

Morgan Freeman reunites with Reiner to play Monte Wildhorn, a wheelchair-bound Western novelist who has lost the desire to write. He moves to a cabin by the lake for the summer and befriends a neighboring single mother (Madsen) and her daughters, who help him rediscover his imagination. Freeman’s gentle, quiet performance makes this a solid “Sunday afternoon” watch.
