There was a little confusion as to why Netflix Originals might be leaving Netflix, but as we’ve consistently covered, not all Netflix Originals are created equally. As we explained in our recently published guide, there are many types of Netflix originals. in the matter of she raNetflix was the exclusive distributor for a certain period, with the underlying rights owned by another party, in this case, DreamWorks Animation (i.e., NBC Universal).
There is precedent for renewals for Netflix Originals, but that’s unlikely to happen here, even if the show performs very well for Netflix, with Netflix engagement reports showing that it has drawn 16.3 million views between early 2023 and mid-2025.
Responding to the news, the show’s creator (and also the man behind Nimona, which Netflix rescued) Said,
“Unfortunately, we have known about this for some time, and it has already happened with several other DreamWorks shows as their licenses with Netflix expire. Years of hard work by many talented crews has ended without a home. We the showrunners have no control over this.
I hope She-Ra finds a new home and is released in its entirety on DVD; I’m not sure that will happen. As is often the case with queer art, our tracks are swept away behind us. Still it happened. Look at it whenever possible and keep records whenever possible. Its legacy is in your hands.”
In a final tweet, he posted a series of emojis that let you watch it even after its departure from Netflix. For obvious reasons we will not say clearly what is implied here. We will say that many DreamWorks Animation series that have already ended have not found long-term new streaming homes, and while some are available on VOD, most are not. They sometimes air linearly, but most people will want a single place to find future episodes.
