Tommy Wirkola is bringing his signature brand of bloody mayhem to Netflix. The shark-infested hurricane thriller, originally scheduled for theaters via Sony Pictures, is now officially titled spanking, Coming exclusively to Netflix globally on April 10, 2026. Here are the details of everything you need to know about the upcoming movie starring Phoebe Dynevor, Whitney Peak, and Djimon Hounsou.
If you’ve been keeping track of Sony’s release calendar over the past year, you may have seen a game of musical chairs with this particular project. First announced under the working title under the stormThe film was originally scheduled for theatrical release on August 1, which was pushed to July 3 under the new title, shudder.
However, the film was removed from Sony’s theatrical slate entirely earlier this year. The reason for this is not entirely clear, although it was immediately announced that its title would be changed. This is likely due to a conflict with Tim Miller’s time loop shark thriller (also known as shudder) left the film temporarily untitled, but more importantly, Sony opted to send the film straight to streaming.
Producer Adam McKay (don’t look up) expressed his The excitement for streaming started this yearby stating:
“We couldn’t be more excited to be back in business with all of our friends at Netflix on this film. We had a great experience together on Don’t Look Up and we look forward to working with them to make this an event streaming release in 2026.”
