After weeks of rumors, theories, and speculation, Netflix has announced that Francesca (Hannah Dodd) and Michaela (Masali Baduza) are the main characters. bridgerton Season 5. Following the announcement, we’re scouring social media for immediate reactions – and viewers are a mix of joy and irritation.
Whereas bridgerton While Season 4 focused on the romance between Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and Sophie, the ‘Lady in Silver’ (Yerin Ha), it also focused heavily on Francesca’s story. It established the foundation and even covered large elements of Francesca’s main arc, as told in Julia Quinn’s novel. when he was evil. Initially, Francesca was happily married to John Sterling. However, midway through the season, John tragically dies in his sleep, leaving her homeless. She finds comfort and solace in John’s cousin Michaela, who has been gender-changed from the books. By the season finale, Francesca and Michaela’s bond becomes more close – and their relationship will turn into romance in Season 5.
Season 5 features a two-year time-jump. At that time, the show could have been done Covered Alois’s story, giving Francesca time to mourn. Instead, the writers have decided to pursue and continue Francesca’s side of the story.
In telling a queer story, Season 5 represents another significant breakthrough in queer representation. Of course, the author of bridgerton Gender-swapped Michaela Sterling (who was Michael in the novels). Its purpose was to present a strange love story and show strange happiness in a story that has a happy ending. This creative decision is one of the main talking points of the show, and has divided viewers.

The decision to gender-change the character of Michael had the full support of writer Julia Quinn, although she was hesitant to give her blessing at first. “Anyone who’s watched my interviews over the past four years knows I’m committed to making the world of Bridgerton more diverse and inclusive as the stories move from book to screen,” Quinn wrote on Instagram. “But changing the gender of a major character is a huge change, and so when Jess Brownell first approached me with the idea of changing Michael to Michaela for the show, I needed more information before I gave my consent.”
Quinn ultimately became a strong supporter of the change, writing: “I now believe that when Francesca’s season of Bridgerton happens, it will be the most emotional and heartbreaking story of the show, as when he was evil The Bridgerton book series has always been a true tear-jerker.”
Showrunner Jess Brownell is incredibly passionate about portraying Sapphic romance in the upcoming season. It is the first major gay romance in the show’s history, and will be one of the most high-profile ever depicted on screen. It was important to convey such a level of representation. “It feels unprecedented,” Brownell told Netflix this morning. “Obviously, there are a lot of great shows that depict queer love. We’re not the first by any means. But to create a perfect show bridgerton The season seems to be very much about a female relationship.
How are fans reacting to the Bridgerton Season 5 announcement?

Following the announcement of Season 5, fans have given their opinions on the case heard. Overall, the response has been positive; Many have celebrated the introduction of low-key romance into the story. Below are some of the most positive responses and findings:
The strangest thing about Bridgerton season 5 is that two women will be leading such a big show. Sapphix has been hungry for a massive production and that’s exactly what we’re getting, it feels like such a tremendous win, especially because one of the lead characters is a black woman. we are alive https://t.co/ecW4ljP32u

I don’t think people realize how big of a deal it is to portray Sapphoic love in the lead role on one of the biggest shows on TV. I don’t remember when it happened and it was so big. People need to realize how big a deal it is to have this kind of representation. #bridgerton #netflix #ww https://t.co/5R0ZKHjGFZ

A gay couple is leading Netflix’s biggest show. There will be another train of hate from the usual suspects but real people know this is going to be something beautiful for those who are yearning for this representation 🫂 https://t.co/Uq0h3bF6kT

Every positive response has been met with an equal amount of criticism. Some viewers are going to skip the upcoming season altogether.

But FacebookThe reactions were similar. One user wrote, “And this will be the season I miss.” “Fran’s story is my favorite of them all, with Eloise’s story a close second. It doesn’t need to be revised to the point that it no longer resembles the bones of the book.”
Many fans thought it was Eloise’s turn to step into the spotlight

Given the strong foundation laid to develop Francesca’s story, it always felt like Hannah Dodd would be taking the reins for the upcoming season. As noted, the decision to give Francesca the lead goes against the chronological sequence of the novels, with Eloise’s (Claudia Jessi) story told first.
Fans are desperate to see Eloise step into the spotlight, as the character has only been on the periphery in recent seasons. One of the biggest and loudest reactions was disappointment that Season 5 would not follow Eloise. One user wrote, “I just know this will be hard to swallow, but oh well, I’ll wait another four years to see Philois.” Another commented, “I was really looking forward to Eloise’s story! This was my favorite book in the series.”
I’m sorry but what?! Fran had just been widowed! Eloise’s book is next! Alois has been there since day one. Why is Fran able to get ahead of him? I like Fran but it doesn’t mean anything weird. This is very unfair to Eloise, the actress, and her fans.

Are you happy or disappointed that Netflix is covering Francesca and Michaela in season 5 of Bridgerton? pic.twitter.com/4kiXPGQBl6

One user wrote, “Disappointed. Most fans wanted Eloise and not Francesca. Clearly, no one wants Francesca’s season because of how they are changing the couple’s dynamic from the book.”
Another expressed immense joy: “I’m so happy to see a queer love story in a series that advocates inclusivity. In this time of misogyny and intolerance, seeing a story of two women in love is absolutely refreshing and necessary.”
Eloise’s story may be partially told in Bridgerton season 5
If one thing is for sure, once Season 5 airs, there will be zero discussions on who will lead Season 6. And for those planning to skip the upcoming season in favor of waiting for Eloise’s story, it’s worth noting that we’ll see the groundwork laid for Eloise’s story in Season 5, just as Francesca’s arc was partially covered in Season 4.
Alois’s romance begins as a long-distance relationship through letter-writing, which later turns into a personal romance. Eloise falls in love with Sir Philip Crane, Marina Thompson’s husband. The character has already been cast in the series, playing Chris Fulton. He appears in season 1, marrying Marina after his brother’s death, and appears briefly in season 2.
It seems that both Eloise and Sir Philip Crane will begin exchanging letters in Season 5, sowing the seeds needed to lead into Season 6.
bridgerton Production on Season 5 has now begun. Netflix hasn’t set a release date, but we expect it to arrive in late 2027 or early 2028.
