In one of the final scenes of season 6 peaky blindersThomas Shelby condemns what remains of his loyal friends and family by saying: “For family. Sometimes, it’s a shelter from the storm. Sometimes, it’s the storm itself.”
This has always been true for Thomas. In many ways, his family was the only thing that kept him together after the horrors of wartime France, giving him purpose, guidance and a reason to live in a time filled with drugs, alcohol and anger. But, he can also be the cursed man of the family, the devil on his shoulder, and the one who puts his loved ones in danger once he plays too many tricks. Moreover, we have also seen his own family trying to oust him.
When the series went black, Thomas was on the air. A caravan that was supposed to be his final resting place caught fire. The spirit of his late daughter Ruby saved him from taking his own life. We don’t know what he will do or where he will go. All we know is that he is alive.
with Peaky Blinders: The Immortal ManWe join Thomas in self-imposed exile, living out his days with Johnny Dogs in a house that is as beaten and withered as what remains of his soul. There is no family other than those he sees whispering on the property or those buried in the ground. He himself is not a ghost, but he might as well be. He does not go out, he never has guests; Nevertheless, he still has not found peace with his past.

The film brings us back to Birmingham several years after the end of “Blinders.” With Thomas gone, it’s taken over by his bastard gypsy son Duke (played by Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan). peaky blindersRunning rampant through the city with a recklessness far worse than his father and uncles. He acts like a man with no loyalty, without morality or compassion. Even without his father, he lives under his shadow.

Established in 1940, Duke and the Blinders run their business in an atmosphere of chaos and despair. Birmingham is bombed and destroyed in the new wartime era as England does its best to stop Germany in the time of fascism. What’s worse, the Germans have hatched a plan to destroy the British economy by flooding the streets with millions of counterfeit notes. To get this money into the hands of the British people they will need to engage the most powerful and most corrupt people at street level; People love Duke Shelby.
When a German operative (played by another Oscar nominee in Tim Roth) approaches Duke with the deal of a lifetime, young Shelby finds herself put in the crosshairs of her remaining family and her country teetering on the brink of collapse; Something that could bring the legendary image of Thomas Shelby back to the streets he once ruled.
The Immortal Man serves as the only thing we never got from season 6 of the original series: closure. It’s a way of showing what Tommy would be like if he didn’t have Pol or Arthur or Grace in his life; What would a guardrail-less Shelby do without them and how far they would fall. This is Shakespearean dynamism with bitter tragedy on the horizon; Presented with a level of brutality, mysticism and redemption that could only be expected from the pen of Steven Knight.

The focus may be on Tommy and Duke, but Ada’s conscience and moral compass are really the catalyst for everything as it is, of course. While many believed that the only person who could kill Tommy Shelby was Tommy Shelby, the series consistently showed the one thing that could give reason and guidance to Tommy Shelby was a strong-willed woman. Unfortunately, Duke learns the hard way that he should heed the same advice.
As for Tommy himself, fans of the show get to see a much truer and much more emotional ending to his story. The series and this new film talk about peace; Peace Tommy gives to the doctor who betrayed him at the 11th hour, peace Duke’s gypsy aunt (played by the always mesmerizing Rebecca Ferguson) tells Tommy she can give him after he saves her son. Thomas Shelby wants to be free of the guilt, the blood on his hands, the curses on his family, the burden of his patriarchal position, and the horrors he cannot overcome.
In the end, the convicted soldier returns to his former glory. Strategic genius defeats his enemy and brings peace to himself, his family and his home. He fulfills the promise “something good will come out of this bad” that he made to his family on their deathbeds because Thomas Shelby knows what made him feel immortal: “But through it all, I had my family.”
Immortal man cannot fully survive to that height peaky blinders Reached its peak, but, in a way, is not expected to happen. It’s a reminder that Thomas Shelby achieved what he could because he had a family to support his game, correct him, and give him something to live for. This film liberates him; A taste of what he was before the war and what he could have been as a father if he had not been destroyed by the war.

MVP of Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man
Cillian Murphy as Thomas Shelby
Of course he is. He’s Thomas F–kin Shelby.
Oscar winner Cillian Murphy has been admired for many characteristics throughout his long, distinguished career: his attractive facial features, his deep blue eyes, his quiet but charming nature, his strong intelligence as the son of two teachers, and his artistic soul. But Murphy rarely finds a role that encompasses so many characteristics at once and, in Thomas Shelby, he does.
The intensity, the softness that lies beneath, the chess master, the architect, the tortured genius, the patriarch… it all fits into the wheelhouse of Murphy, who performs better with simultaneous command and burden than most of his peers.
Ironically, in The Immortal Man, Murphy gets Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne in a story that plays out in more ways than one in The Dark Knight Rises: a man removed from the society he once ruled by his own design, something he couldn’t accomplish in his prime, and returned to his famous hero life to save his community from extinction. Even after 4 years away, Murphy flawlessly returns as Tommy Shelby with the same infectious passion and presence as he did over 6 extraordinary seasons.
If you’re a fan of the show, I encourage you to check out this apt song by Thomas Shelby from The Order of the Peaky Blinders.
