It’s been a tough pill to swallow for its fans coast. Despite massive viewing hours, the show ultimately didn’t get a season 2 order — and now, creator Kevin Williamson is shedding some light on why that happened.

In the data we got from Netflix, including weekly viewing numbers, things looked strong. It spent 5 weeks in the top 10, achieving 200.1M viewing hours, which is equivalent to 31.2M views. Expanding through the rest of 2025 (the show debuted on June 19, 2025), the show received 258.5 million hours and 40.3 million viewing equivalents, so viewership was definitely up already. Still, we had no official reason for this not happening other than business confirmation from Netflix. According to Williamson, the show’s viewers did not finish the season fast enough within Netflix’s required decision window. Criminal? Age of audience.
“I learned a lot about ‘completion.’ They can track down exactly who watched the show, how many minutes watched, how many episodes watched. It’s an interesting way they can measure the success of a show.
What happened was that the average age was 52 years. coast. People aged 50 and 60 are not as irritable as young people. Therefore it takes more time to complete the metrics. My contract says you have to make a decision within this amount of time. Ultimately it met the completion rate, just not in the time they allow for it. I don’t know if that’s the reason or not.”
This is an interesting peek behind the curtain. Another key factor we often highlight is the studio behind the series. coast Netflix was produced by an outside studio rather than in-house, which changes the economics of renewal.
