Series showrunners and creators Jeffrey Addis and Will Matthews shared the following on the creation of the series:

“When Jeff was a kid he only drew monsters and when Will was a kid he started planning his retirement. So a show about a group of retirees who fight monsters really plays to both of our strengths. The result is an adventure about a group of unlikely heroes that we can’t wait for everyone to fall in love with.”

From the beginning, we knew we wanted The Burrow to feel equal parts scary, mysterious, exciting, and emotional. The challenge was to create a world that could capture all these different voices together. That’s why it was so fun to work with the Duffer Brothers, masters of balancing heart and fear.

According to some very informal napkin math, our stars bring something like 350 years of craftsmanship to the borough. We knew they would be great. We didn’t expect them to be so much fun. They can make you laugh or cry with just one look. Makes it a lot easier for us writers.

Sam Cooper (Alfred Molina) is the heart of our story. He has recently lost his wife and is trying to figure out what to do with the time he has left. This is a question we all face. No matter our age. It’s just that the more years you have, the higher the stakes become.

Everyone wants to create a show that teens can watch with their parents. “We wanted to create something that teens could watch with their parents and grandparents that everyone could enjoy.”

“For years, we’ve wondered why no one made a movie like Ron Howard’s wonderful Cocoon since, well, Cocoon. Then, out of nowhere, Jeff and Will emailed us an idea for The Burrow: a story about retirees and monsters. They were adamant that – unlike many stories about older characters – it wouldn’t treat aging as a punchline. Instead, it would treat its characters as real people facing real challenges. It was exactly the show we were dreaming of.

While the characters in Stranger Things are a little older than the kids (they ride golf carts instead of bikes), the sentiment is very much the same. At its core, it’s a story about belonging and growing up – no matter your age – filled with thrills, surprises, comedy, scares and tears.

And most importantly, you will fall in love with these characters.

It was truly magical to see legends like Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Clarke Peters, Dennis O’Hare and Bill Pullman come to life. The monsters are great – but it’s the characters that will stay with you.
