Nevermore Academy is getting a major roster change for its highly anticipated third season. A huge Beetlejuice reunion is headed to Netflix, but fans will also have to say goodbye to a familiar face.
The latest news in recent weeks is that production is now underway in Ireland and the season will premiere in mid-2025 – quickly becoming Netflix’s fifth most watched English language season of TV – and the gears are already shifting for Season 3. Showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar, along with executive producer and director Tim Burton, are shaking up the cast with some incredible new additions and one notable departure.
Here’s everything you need to know about The Wednesday Season 3’s latest casting news, according to trade reports this morning.
Winona Ryder is going to Nevermore Academy
This may be the most on-brand casting in Netflix history, Winona Ryder has officially booked a guest-starring role in Wednesday Season 3.
The casting sets up a wonderful reunion for the newly formed Beetlejuice family. Ryder will reunite with his on-screen daughter Jenna Ortega, director Tim Burton, and writers Al Gough and Miles Millar.
The exact details of who will play Ryder are being kept under wraps, but the creative team is already discussing his arrival.
“When it comes to OutKast, Winona Ryder is the GOAT,” showrunners Gough and Miller shared in a statement. “His brilliant partnership with Tim Burton has defined some of cinema’s most unforgettable characters. We loved collaborating with him on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome him to Nevermore.”
Tim Burton expressed excitement, saying, “I’m so glad Winona has joined us; she fits into this world perfectly. And she’s a dear friend. I always feel lucky to work with her.” Whether Burton is directing this season remains a mystery.
The guest spot marks a very swift return to Netflix for Ryder. The actress recently ended her long-running stint as Joyce Byers on Stranger Things, concluding the massive two-hour series last New Year’s Eve.
Noah B. Taylor (Bruno Yusson) departs from the series
While we’re welcoming a Netflix veteran to the cast, fans will also have to bid farewell to a season 2 veteran. Noah B. Tailorwho played Bruno Eusson, will not return for the third season. While details regarding the character’s departure from the Nevermore universe are currently limited, Taylor’s exit marks a significant change in the show’s ensemble as writers make room for new characters and an expanded storyline. Who else is joining and returning in Season 3?
Ryder isn’t the only major star packing her bags for Nevermore. As previously announced, eva green (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, penny terrible) is also joining the cast of season 3. Greene is set to play Ophelia, sister of Catherine Zeta-Jones’ Morticia Addams. Joanna Lumley, debuting in season 2, has been made a series regular.
The expanded guest roster joins the returning main cast in a big way. Along with Jenna Ortega, viewers can expect to see the return of Emma Myers, Hunter Doohan, Joey Sunday, Moses Mustafa, Georgie Farmer, Isaac Ordonez, Billie Piper, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo, Victor Dorobantu, and Evie Templeton. The adults of the Addams Family—Luis Guzman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Joanna Lumley, and Fred Armisen—are all scheduled to return.
