As always, we’ll be dividing this article into two sections: First, we’ll cover our most anticipated new Netflix Original movies (be careful, this one is pretty cool, so we only have two). In these instances, the movies will be added to Netflix US, with availability varying in other regions.

Swedish connection
coming to netflix: 19 February

Netflix’s international slate has quietly built a strong track record with World War II stories, and The Swedish Connection aims to join that company when it arrives in February. Based on true events, the Swedish drama follows Gösta Engel (Henrik Dorsin), Rutt Vogel (Cissela Benn) and their colleagues at the Foreign Ministry in 1942, as Sweden walks a careful diplomatic line to avoid provoking Nazi Germany. Jewish visa applications are routinely left untouched in order to maintain neutrality, a moral reckoning begins when Rutt begins to question this practice just as rumors of extermination camps begin to spread. What follows is a tense, fast-paced story where bureaucracy becomes a silent weapon, and paperwork, legal loopholes and restrained diplomacy are used to confront a brutal regime that turns civil servants into unlikely heroes who help save lives during the Holocaust.
burst fire
coming to netflix: 20 February

Our only other Netflix Original movie pick for the month is also international: burst fireFrom Netflix Spain. That division is hoping for a strong year in 2025 after some major upsets, but this one looks like a potential winner. The story will be familiar to those who have read European crime thrillers, the plot focuses on Mara, who travels to a summer house in the woods with her daughter, brother-in-law and his wife, and her son, with the hope that Mara’s wounds will heal after the death of her husband. What is supposed to be a time of healing turns into a traumatic affair when a forest fire occurs and Lyd, his daughter, goes missing. There are a few more layers of story to be added on top of that, but this being a mystery thriller, it’s probably best to leave it on the back burner. Based on what we’ve seen so far it appears to be intense and well-acted. Fingers crossed it delivers.
blue moon (2025)
coming to netflix: 14 February
Moving quickly onto the licensed titles, we start with an SVOD debut that comes at a great time, considering the film was recently nominated for two Oscars. Coming to Netflix as part of Sony Pictures’ first window deal, it comes from Richard Linklater (who worked on it). hit it friend The latest for Netflix last year, employing the incredible talents of Ethan Hawke (nominated for Leading Actor), Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale and Andrew Scott – some acting veterans. The beloved and critically acclaimed biopic tells the story of Lorenz Hart, the lead author of the musical “Oklahoma!” Battling alcoholism and mental health while trying to save face during the inauguration.
how to Train Your Dragon (2025)
coming to netflix: 10 February
fans of how to Train Your Dragon Will really want a Netflix subscription in February, given that both animated movies (both are fantastic and deserve their spot on this list, but alas, we’re already pressed for space!) But the one we’re going to draw your attention to is last year’s live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon. Following in the footsteps of Disney, whose entire live-action business these days is adapting its animated classics, DreamWorks is now following suit, and it’s done a surprisingly good job.
Serving as a nearly 1:1 remake of the animated film, it offers a fresh perspective, directed by Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner Dean DeBlois. Reprising the original role is Gerard Butler, but there are also a number of new faces and voices, including Nico Parker, Nick Frost and Mason Thomas.
Huge (2016)
coming to netflix: 9 February
Sometimes a director’s audacious mix of conflicting styles can go horribly wrong – but Nacho Vigalondo doesn’t seem to mind. Best known for his low-budget time-loop thriller Timecrimes, Vigalondo seamlessly moved into high-concept territory. Huge. Inspired by a specific allegory, this unique story follows Gloria (Anne Hathaway) – an unemployed writer struggling with alcohol addiction – who returns to her hometown for a hit reset. When she discovers a psychic connection with a giant kaiju terrorizing Seoul, her personal demons are literally revealed. However, when her childhood friend Oscar (Jason Sudeikis) reveals his own dark influence on the situation, it threatens her recovery and the safety of millions of people.
Lauded by critics but often misunderstood by mainstream audiences, this indie sci-fi gem leans toward black comedy and has been dominating my TikTok feed for the past few weeks. For anyone willing to embrace weirdness, this is a smart, character-driven reminder of the monstrous destruction hidden within small personal conflicts.
archive (2020)
coming to netflix: 6 February
Sticking to the sci-fi vibe, we move on to The Archive, a forgotten straight-to-video release from 2020 starring Theo James, best known for his serious performances on Netflix this season. gentlemenWhich will finally return for Season 2 this year. Fast forward 12 years into the future to 2038, we follow George Almore, who is a pioneer in the AI field (yes, we’re all tired of AI, but trust me, it’s worth it) and is working on a brand new prototype that will change everything while also getting him back to his wife who passed away.
Given its limited budget, it’s a surprisingly impressive film, and it scratches a sci-fi itch that many films struggle to address these days. The ending has been somewhat controversial, as I discovered while researching this piece, so I’d be interested to hear your thoughts if you think about it.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning (2023)
coming to netflix: 25 February
Although Netflix is in a battle with Paramount for the future of Warner Bros., that’s not stopping some of Paramount’s biggest movies of the last few years from still coming to Netflix, and next up on the list is Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (or do we not mention this naming convention now?). Serving as the seventh installment of the Tom Cruise spy thriller series rivaling James Bond, it is the first of a two-part film (the second of which is now streaming exclusively on Paramount+). The film follows Ethan Hunt and his IMF team as they discover a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity.
For a myriad of reasons, these most recent Mission: Impossible movies didn’t perform as well as expected at the box office, but if you got the chance to see both of them, you won’t be disappointed. This first film in particular has great performances all around, amazing death defying stunts and a plot that isn’t too ridiculous.
triangle of sorrow (2022)
coming to netflix: 25 February
From Neon, the film follows celebrity model couple Carl and Yaya, who are invited on a luxury cruise for the super-rich, conducted by a boat captain. What starts out as an Instagrammable trip with Russian oligarchs and British arms dealers soon turns into a disaster. When a brutal storm strikes during the Captain’s seven-course dinner, the social hierarchy is overturned, leaving the survivors stranded on a desert island where beauty is no longer a currency.
If you’ve got the guts for it, this Palme d’Or winner is one of the ugliest and most hilarious satires of the last decade. Director Ruben Östlund dissects class dynamics, toxic masculinity, and the beauty industry with a sledgehammer rather than a scalpel. The film is infamous for a particular 15-minute sequence that will leave you shivering and feeling like you need a bath. However, trust me, it is worth the trip.
black phone (2021)
coming to netflix: 12 February
We’re back with another Ethan Hawke title from the last five years and, in fact, another Mason Thames film for the list. We’re talking about The Black Phone, a horror-thriller that defied expectations in 2022 and was recently slated to arrive on Netflix this May. At the center of the story is young Finny, who is kidnapped by a ruthless killer and locked in a soundproof basement. The story takes a supernatural turn when a disconnected wall phone starts ringing. On the other end are the ghostly voices of the killer’s past victims – and they are determined to help Finny avoid the fate they could not avoid.
Although the concept seems unlikely to work on paper, the implementation is seamless. Thanks to Scott Derrickson’s direction and the sharp screenplay he co-wrote with C. Robert Cargill, this remains an excellent, high-stakes watch.
iron claw (2023)
coming to netflix: 19 February
The genius of A24 lies in their ability to surprise from every angle. In this extraordinary 2023 extravaganza from writer-director Sean Durkin, that surprise comes in the form of Zac Efron’s career-defining performance. Turning back the clock, the film invites you to witness the true story of the Von Erich brothers who faced sacrifice, struggle and bitter tragedy to build a professional wrestling dynasty.
The supporting cast is just as terrific as Efron, including powerhouse actors like Jeremy Alan White, Harris Dickinson, Maura Tierney, Stanley Simmons, Holt McCallany, and Lily James. Together, they transform a sports biopic into a hauntingly beautiful Greek tragedy.
