Netflix is bringing more Formula 1 coverage in 2026. In addition to Drive to Survive returning for its second season this February and the 2021 biopic Schumacher, the streamer recently announced a new feature-length documentary, Schumacher ’94Focusing on the most important year of the racing legend’s career.
The announcement came today during Netflix’s What Next from Berlin. 2026 Showcase, where the streamer unveiled its upcoming slate of German-made content and international non-fiction features for 2026, and it’s fair to say that its slate is pretty full.
As mentioned, this is the second major documentary produced by Netflix on the F1 superstar. In 2021, it released the documentary titled Schumacher, which gave us a comprehensive overview of the life of Michael Schumacher. Hans-Bruno Kamertens, Vanessa Nocker, and Michael Veitch were behind that title, and it left Netflix for a while before eventually returning.
Here’s everything we know so far Schumacher ’94.
What is Schumacher ’94 about?
Unlike the 2021 documentary, this new project promises to be a detailed, in-depth look at the year that changed everything: 1994. It focuses on that particular Formula 1 season, which is known for extreme highs and devastating lows.
According to the official synopsis provided by Netflix at the Berlin event, the film tracks 25-year-old Michael Schumacher as he wins the first Grand Prix of the season in Brazil while racing for the Benetton-Ford team. This victory set the stage for what would become a phenomenal career, giving rise to the global phenomenon known as “Shumi Mania”.

However, the documentary won’t shy away from the season’s darkness. 1994 was one of the most dramatic years in the history of the sport, tragically marked with Ayrton Senna’s fatal crash at Imola, as well as widespread allegations of manipulation, technical fraud and improper driving maneuvers that plagued the grid.
Similar to previous projects supported by the family, Schumacher ’94 This will include intimate contributions from those closest to the driver. Michael’s wife and longtime emotional anchor Corinna Schumacher is confirmed to be involved in the documentary. The film aims to separate the public’s perception of Schumacher as an “uncompromising warrior” from his private personality as a sensitive and empathetic man.
According to the announcement, Corinna will “provide insight into the beginning of an extraordinary love story – one that’s still going strong today”, suggesting that the film will balance the techno and sports drama of ’94 with a strong emotional throughline.
