Alice in Borderlands returned for its third season last September. Since then, the future of the show has been unclear, but the final nail in the coffin may have just been discovered. However, as we discuss below, it appears that Season 3 was always designed to be the show’s debut.
ScreenRant recently reported, citing a new report – which garnered quite a bit of attention – that Season 3 will be the final season. We should note that ScreenRant has developed a habit of quoting reports without linking to them. In fact, they give little indication of what the report is, where to find it, or what its specific contents are. Presumably, this is an SEO strategy where blocking the link reassures Google that they are the source. Either way, it’s sloppy work, but I digress.
Which report are they referring to? it isWhat we saw: second half of 2025“The engagement report, which was released in conjunction with Netflix’s fourth-quarter earnings on January 20, is the sixth such report, which includes viewership data from the past six months. The “final season” is confirmed with a special mention regarding Japan. He wrote:
“Fans also flocked to titles like Last Samurai Standing Season 1 (21M) from Japan and the third and final season of Alice in Borderland (25M). The Elixir from Indonesia (23M) and The Ba***ds of Bollywood Season 1 (10M) from India also stood out.”
For What’s On Netflix readers, Season 3 being designated as the final chapter isn’t news. In fact, we updated our post with new information in November 2025 — a few months after Season 3 premiered. we covered Director Shinsuke Sato was working on a new Netflix project (a live-action adaptation) my hero academia) Production is expected to begin in 2026, suggesting that plans for Season 4 have been put on hold.

However, the smoking gun came to light when we learned that Netflix was running ads with influencers in the United Kingdom. An advertisement clearly stated that Season 3 was the final season. Presumably, these collaborations used approved copy from PR and marketing teams, thereby ruling out a mere slip of the tongue.
The confusion stems from Netflix’s failure to clearly communicate in advance that this was the final season, even though that appears to have been the plan all along.
Arguably, the closest thing to an official announcement before release was the main trailer for the third season, titled “last card” This was perhaps the first hint of a conclusion, but honestly, beyond that subtle hint, you’d be forgiven for thinking this isn’t the end. Even Netflix’s own fan site TUDUM failed to label it as the final season.
Of course, labeling it the “final season” now feels like cancellation, considering the end of Season 3 included a cliffhanger that definitely set the stage for more, even though they have now fully adapted the manga. However, given what we know now, that ending was almost certainly a setup for a spin-off (similar to squid game Unclear setup for a US spin-off of season 3 instead of a fourth season). Whether such a project is in active development or will ever come to fruition is unknown.
The good news is that Netflix is prepping its Japanese slate for 2026 and beyond. With a release scheduled before the end of January, there’s a lot to look forward to in this area. Fingers crossed some kind of spin-off eventually comes out.
