The long-awaited sequel to the animated hit wish dragon There’s been a confirmed release window and a first look being presented at a major film event in China in recent months, but its distribution remains unclear, with neither Sony Pictures nor Netflix currently publicly linked.
To recap, wish dragon It was one of three films whose distribution Netflix took over from Sony Pictures Animation in early 2020 (during the pandemic era). The film performed well upon its launch (although top 10 figures were not fully projected at the time of its release), but remains a consistently well-performing film for Netflix, with Netflix engagement reports covering viewership from 2023 to mid-2025 showing that the film is still watched an average of 16.42 million times (28.22 million hours) in each half of the year. Netflix owns the rights to wish dragon Till 2031.
The film was written and directed by Chris Appelhans, with Sony Pictures Animation, Beijing Sparkle Roll Media Corporation, Tencent Pictures, and Base Media behind it. You may know that Appelhans also worked with Maggie Kang kpop demon hunterWhich became a Netflix blockbuster and the streamer’s biggest film till date.
Now, four and a half years after the film’s premiere, we finally have confirmation that a sequel is in the works, but its distribution remains unclear.
Base Media officially pulled the curtain on the next chapter late last year. one in LinkedIn announcement on November 17, 2025With fresh insights from a December podcast interview with Chris Bramble, we now have a clearer picture of what we can expect Wish Dragon 2.
Official reveal at Golden Rooster 2025
Base Media founder and CEO Chris Bramble presented a “first look” of the new film during the 2025 Golden Rooster film promotion event. The studio’s official statement confirms that the sequel is aiming for a summer 2027 release.
The announcement highlighted the massive success of the first film, noting that wish dragon Shortlisted for an Academy Award, nominated for a Golden Rooster Award, and ranked #1 on Netflix’s global animation chart with over 150 million views.
According to the studio, the sequel will include:
- fully advanced view
- deep storytelling
- expanded world building
- new characters
The LinkedIn post confirmed that the project is being “brought to life once again by the original US-China creative team led by director, producer Chris Bramble and writer Chris Appelhans.”

Production status and Sony’s involvement
Following the November revelations, Chris Bramble provided further context on the business side of the production in an interview in early December before and after podcast, Confirming that they are “starting production.” wish dragon 2,Saying that they had “exhausted all financing.”
While the first film was a partnership with Sony Pictures Animation, the sequel, at least for now, is charting an independent course. Bramble explained the current situation as trying to become masters of their own destiny, saying, “They’re trying to own what we do instead of doing it for some beautiful clients.”
Bramble explains, “Sony were amazing partners. They came in and got involved in the film as it was going into production, as did Tencent. And so we’re moving forward with the sequel, and Sony is out of it at the moment, but waiting to see how it goes. And so we’ll try to hook up with them soon.”
