stranger things returned for the last time, and for the most part, it covered some of the gaping holes left by Volume 2 and provided a perfect ending. For the most part, most of the major plot points have been resolved, but we still have some burning (and unanswered) questions.
Naturally, it goes without saying that this piece will be absolutely full of spoilers. If you haven’t watched the Season 5 finale yet – turn away!
Many of these unanswered questions could be a hint of what’s to come in the potential spin-off that has been widely talked about, albeit possibly in the vaguest terms, ahead of Season 5. We understand it’s only in active development, not pre-production or even greenlit yet.
Where is L? Is he still alive?
The biggest burning question is the one with which the series ends: What happened to L? The ending is ambiguous, as you know, Mike has told the story of a possible escape rather than treating it as fact. Mike reiterates Kali’s demise and adds some additional dialogue, suggesting there may still be life in Eleven and instead of being swept away with the collapse of the wormhole, L is aided and abetted by her escape and finds herself in Iceland (at least, that’s where it was filmed and a portion was this year, long after the series finale – perhaps suggesting a last minute addition?) or another Nordic region? Maybe Norway or something like that?

Naturally, this is all Mike’s retelling It is possible occurred, and, from what we can tell, was the only evidence of Eleven’s moving fingers in the portal, a sign that it was the work of Kali.

In an exclusive interview between the Duffer Brothers and Netflix, they explain this ending somehow.
The Duffer Brothers intended to confront the harsh reality of Eleven’s situation, moving beyond a “fantasy version” of a happy ending and accepting that a normal life in Hawkins was impossible for her. Matt Duffer explains that while characters like Mike cling to an optimistic narrative, the logical truth is that Eleven cannot simply “hang out” with the gang without having their world collapse. As a result, the creators decided that to truly bring closure to the Upside Down’s storyline and keep Eleven safe, she would have to be separated from the group. There was never a version of the script where she stayed; Her departure was a narrative necessity to protect both herself and the people she loves.
Ross Duffer says that Eleven symbolizes “the magic of childhood” and that her departure symbolizes the end of that innocent stage of the characters’ lives. Instead of taking away her powers or providing concrete solutions, the Duffers sought a poignant ambiguity. He felt that it was beautiful to have the characters move forward by believing in Eleven’s optimistic future, even without evidence. This shared belief allows the group to find emotional closure, preserve the “magic” of their journey, and accept that they must move on.
Matt concluded in his answers, “If Eleven is there, the most they can hope for is the belief that it’s true because they can’t get in touch with her. If that were the case, everything would fall apart. So if that’s the story, it’s really the best way to keep her alive. And it’s about Mike and everyone else finding a way to move on from what happened.”
Maybe Finn’s theory, which he said three years ago now, was right – we’ll see them all in 20 years!? We should also note that, for years, a rumor has been circulating that there would be an Eleven spin-off. Although it has been rejected, can we consider Dexter-Type By-product? The creation of another portal and new wormhole would not be impossible. The Russians came close, but they didn’t have the technology in Season 3, so they went to Hawkins.
Why is Hop going to Montauk?
stranger things Borrowed from multiple sources, including real-world conspiracy theories, which is why our ears perked up when Hope mentioned her potential new job to Joyce right before he proposed.
As many have already pointed out, The Montauk Project is a widely known conspiracy principle that partially induced stranger things and, at one point, served as the show’s working title. For those unfamiliar, the theory alleges that the US government has developed psychological warfare techniques and alien research, including time travel,
Is the reference simply a reflection of that name or something else?
Other Small Burning Questions After Stranger Things Season 5
- Dr. K’s back story – We know Dr. K’s motivations are that she wants to create more good kids and that’s why L had to disappear, but we still have a lot of questions about her past. During Season 5, we got several spoilers that she was actually related to Dr. Brenner (brother, we were told), but her backstory mainly felt incomplete.
- The army just moved forward and left? Continuing from the last one, we know everyone got their happy ending, but some questions remain on the bridge between that finale and the events of the epilogue. Most of the crew and adults killed a significant number of the soldiers. Was all this forgiven just like that?
- Who Opened the Door in Season 1 Episode 1? We were promised an answer by the Duffer Brothers in interviews during Season 5 as to who opened the door in that first episode and let the Demogorgon in. The pair have already denied being Vecna/Henry in person, so it is now assumed that he did it telekinetically, but this has not been explicitly confirmed.
- Why did Vecna choose Will? The end of Volume 2 reveals that Vecna only chose Will because he was different from the others and therefore weak.
- What was in Max’s letters? Cast your mind back to Season 4, and we know that Max wrote a personal letter to each party, knowing she could soon meet her demise. Did she get to say everything she wanted to say?
- Relationships – especially Dustin and Robin – Given that Suzie’s actress was at the Los Angeles premiere, we thought she would be in attendance, but her relationship with Dustin has been completely ignored. Whether Robin and Vicki will be together till the end or not is also up in the air. Robin indicated that they were not.

- Why did the dial color change in WSQK? – One Viral video has been pointed out It was discovered that the handle and dial of the Squawk radio station had changed color (from gray to red), just as the roundabout in Holly’s vision had changed from yellow to gray. Was this just a props mistake?
- What was Will talking about in the woods and milkshakes? Similarly, when Will was coming out, he told two such things which could not be connected. He said he loves milkshakes from Melvalds, a general store that doesn’t sell milkshakes, and said he enjoys walking in the woods, which is strange because that’s exactly what he was doing when he was kidnapped in S1.
- What was that thing in the suitcase? We now know that Henry was infected by some kind of rock that connected it to the Mindflayer, and the government employee was apparently rushing to hide it from being destroyed or misplaced. Where did it come from? Was it always connected to the Mindflayer?
- Why did Hopper and Joyce never admit that they went to school with Henry? This is a strange thing. In the play, he interacts with Henry on several occasions, so it’s a bit strange that they never actually acknowledge that they went to the same school.
- Birthday’s – Henry and Will share the same birthday, which was hinted to be significant, but they never went anywhere.
- Why didn’t Will feel sad or realize Mindflayer’s demise? Over the past few seasons, Will has been incredibly connected to the hive mind, feeling what they feel, but in the finale, when the Mindflayer was being mortgaged, he didn’t seem upset. Our explanation for this is that he has mastered the ability to tap in and out of the hivemind, so he will be able to choose how to feel. That’s why he didn’t die when Vecna and it died. That said, it would have been nice to see some scenes of mavericks leaving Will alone.
- Why did Vecna need 12? Did he also have the ability to control Vecna? It is still unclear why Vecna specifically needed 12 children. We know he needed them to keep the world together, but why 12 in particular? Furthermore, would those children have any connection to Vecna if they were gone? I was expecting some lame sequence at the end Thor: Love and ThunderBut thankfully this did not happen.
This is enough for now. These are the questions we’re still asking after the end of Season 5 – what are yours? Let us know in the comments.
