Set in the period between the American Civil War and the end of World War I, the story highlights the conflicts of two generations of brothers; the first the kind-hearted Adam Trask and the wild one Brother Charles eventually marries Kathy Ames, a wicked, cunning and beautiful prostitute; she cheats on him, and becomes engaged to Charles on their wedding night.
Later, after giving birth to twin boys, she shoots Adam and leaves him to return to his former profession. In the shadow of this legacy Adam raises his sons, fair-haired, victorious, yet stubborn Aron and dark, shrewd Caleb. This second generation of brothers compete for their father’s approval. In bitterness, Caleb tells Aron the truth about his mother, who then joins the army and is killed in France.

Since the adaptation was first announced, Florence Pugh has been confirmed to play series lead Cathy Ames. The actress has been incredibly busy over the past few years, with the most notable projects being Dune: Part Two, Oppenheimer, The Boy and the Heron, and reprising her role as Yelena Belova in several Marvel projects.
Zoe Kazan commented on Pugh’s casting:
